While reading the Online Collaborative Inquiry: Classroom Blogging Ventures and Multiple Literacies document, I came across the familiar name Karen Lirenman. I have already checked out her blog as I explored the world of blogging in first grade. But a section in particular caught my eye- Karen Lirenman Skype/ Facetime. My children use these programs all the time at home to connect with friends and I have toyed with the idea of incorporating it into my classroom. This was super inspirational... now all I need is a class I am comfortable enough making this connection with for my first time out! I also really like this teacher's top five post Learning Today Looks Nothing Like Learning in the Past.
This blog is an unending stream of useful information, suggestions, and ideas well worth checking out!
Why not contact Karen to do a Facetime or Skype: her class and yours? She is in Vancouver, Canada, and it would be fun to connect the two classes. Let me know if you need her contact information. You can also find other teachers to do Facetime or Skype with through other channels, such as Twitter, by posting to #1st chat or #2nd chat or even #elmenchat--assuming you know Twitter and have used hashtags. Let me know if you're serious about connecting your class with another 1st or 2nd grade one if you can't find another teacher to do so. You can also start with a teacher locally. However, be sure to prep your students in advance and to collaborate with the other teacher to do some planning. Anyway, Facetime or Skype can also work with authors or other people, perhaps ones related to an upcoming field trip, or something similar.
ReplyDeleteStephanie, I am truly honoured to be the focus of your blog post. It has me totally smiling yet feeling pretty humbled too. I'd love for our classes to connect. My grade one students are very "typical" with lots of wiggles and giggles. Totally smiling now. Thank you! Karen
ReplyDeleteThat sounds great! My class is pretty typical too. I sent you a message through email and look forward to getting started!
